Monday November 22, 2021 “Dancing in the Moonlight” King Harvest
Way back when I was a kid, there were horses then before the motor cars came along, my mother would take me to an annual event called the “Harvest Moon Ball”. This was a dancing spectacular that was so big it was held at Madison Square Garden.
It didn't help make me a better dancer but it was a wonderful shared time and gave me an appreciation of the many varieties of music and dance. So get out some comfortable shoes, and your best ensemble (that’s pronounced ‘on-som-blay’), because we’re going dancing this week.
We’ll start this week’s adventure with King Harvest, a French, heavy metal band from Ithaca NY whose members attended Cornell and who recorded one of the more infectious pop tunes ever. Wait, what? There are just a few contradictions in that statement.
As contrary a tune to the bands metal origins, "Dancing in the Moonlight" has remained a staple of classic rock radio and appeared in TV shows and movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Better Call Saul, Bates Motel, and Girls.
While you’re out there dancing in the moonlight don’t worry because everybody is “out of sight, they don’t bark and they don’t bite”. However, this sweet song that envisions a place of joy and harmony, where everyone gets along dancing under the moonlit sky was written by the keyboard player/songwriter Sherman Kelly and was inspired by a trip to the Caribbean island of Saint Croix, where he was attacked by natives and left for dead.
Stay safe and well..and please note the band’s picture in the video...not what you expected, right?
