Saturday November 20, 2021 “No One to Run With” Allman Brothers
We’re Bo Diddlying with the Allmans today.
Remember that scene from the Cameron Crowe movie Almost Famous where the rock star character jumps from the roof of the motel into the pool...well that was inspired by one of Duane Allman’s exploits. He actually jumped from the third floor of a Travelodge in San Francisco while Crowe, then a young reporter for Rolling Stone, was travelling with the band.
Kind of like the young kid in the Cameron Crowe movie.
Duane Allman spent some time as a session player at FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals where he played guitar on Wilson Pickett’s version of “Hey Jude” and he would also be a member of Derek & the Dominos and contribute the signature slide guitar on the Eric Clapton song “Layla”. Duane left us in 1971 as a result of a motorcycle accident.
His brother Greg carried on leading the band and has the lead on today’s Dicky Betts written tune. Greg left us in 2014.
The Allman Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 by Willie Nelson and Greg was famously so incoherent with his own acceptance that he checked into rehab the next day.
Stay safe and well...and if you look around you can still probably find someone to run with...and that may not be a good thing.
