Saturday November 6, 2021 “Turn Back the Hands of Time” Tyrone Davis
We are doing it again tonight, tomorrow morning technically. We are engaging in one of the more foolish, IMHO, bi-annual time experiments, tinkering with the hands of time, at least one hour at a time.
So I wanted to find out the how, when and why so here you have it: Germany and Austria were the first countries to use DST in 1916, however a few hundred Canadians beat the German Empire by eight years. On July 1, 1908, the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario—today's Thunder Bay—turned their clocks forward by one hour to start the world's first DST period. The rationale was to minimize the use of artificial lighting to save fuel for the war effort. And we still adhere to this today, why?Anyway Tyrone Davis, who sings today’s “Turn Back the Hands of Time” would be at least one happy man knowing that you actually can turn back the hands of time, if not actually then figuratively. Tyrone who? Upon moving from Greenville, SC to Chicago Tyrone Davis landed a job as a chauffeur and valet for bluesman Freddie King which would put him in contact with a variety of blues singers like Bobby Blue Bland, Little Milton and Otis Clay and provide him with the exposure to and direction for the his own professional life as a singer.
“Turn Back the Hands of Time” would be Davis’ third top ten song and a number one Billboard hit and it comes from an album of the same name which has been called by critics as “...one of the best soul LPs of its time.”
“Turn Back the Hands of Time” is so appropriate for tonight’s foolish moment when we turn all those clocks back an hour and the song probably gets a fair amount of radio airplay around that time just as Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” gets played on Groundhog Day. OK maybe that’s only in the movie.
Stay safe and well...and set your alarm for 2:00AM to do it properly.
