Sunday March 14, 2021 “Clocks” Coldplay

Today we engaged in one of the more foolish, IMHO, bi-annual exercises that involves changing the time of the day.  Now I am sure there are reasons for doing this but I just don’t care, it is not a sensible idea.

So this week we are going to examine the concept of time, if not philosophically, at least musically, and what better place to start than with Coldplay’s song about clocks.

Before they were Coldplay this band was Starfish and were being hailed as the next Travis, a band that is way more popular in Europe than in the US no matter how often I promote them (“The Only Thing” with Susannah Hoffs, in case you have forgotten).  Also FWIW Coldplay is known as one of the nicest bands in England.

According to unverified sources ”Clocks” was written after the Coldplay album/CD A Rush of Blood to the Head was completed but based on the belief that this additional tune had strong potential as a hit single, the song was added to the record. A good choice as it became an international top ten song and went on to win a Grammy as Record of the Year.

Chris Martin, lead singer and principal songwriter and Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland made cameo appearances in the film Shaun of the Dead as supporters of the fictional charity ZombAid and Martin had a second role in the film as a zombie.  That aside, Coldplay have sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists

Stay safe and well...and William Willett (1856-1915), who came up with the idea of changing the clocks for British summer time, is Chris Martin's great-great grandfather.  True fact.

The lights go out and I can't be saved

Tides that I tried to swim against

Have brought me down upon my knees

Oh, I beg, I beg and plead

Singin' come out of things un said

Shoot an apple off my head

And a trouble that can't be named

A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singin'

 You are

You are

 Confusion that never stops

Closing walls and ticking clocks

Gonna come back and take you home

I could not stop that you now know

Singin' come out upon my seas

Cursed missed opportunities

Am I a part of the cure

Or am I part of the disease? Singin'

 You are

You are

You are

You are

 You are

You are

 And nothing else compares

Oh, no, nothing else compares

And nothing else compares

 You are

You are

Home, home, where I wanted to go

Home, home, where I wanted to go

Home, home, where I wanted to go

Home, home, where I wanted to go
