Sunday October 4, 2020 “All I Have to Do Is Dream” Everly Brothers
To paraphrase, someone once said in a song that what the world needs now is some harmony and that is as true today as it has ever been. So let’s spend a week with some of the best harmonies rock and rock & roll has to offer and see if it has a harmonizing effect.
And what better place to start than with Phil and Don, the Everly Brothers, one of the originals and what is some of the very best harmonies ever recorded . This amazing duo charted thirty one singles, signed what was to be the very first million dollar recording contract back in 1960 and were among the first ten inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
They were both close friends of Buddy Holly and Phil was one of the pallbearers at Holly’s funeral while Don was so unconsolable over Holly's death that he was not able to attend the services.
“All I Have to Do Is Dream” was written by Boudleaux Bryant, who was half of the world famous husband-and-wife songwriting team, Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. Together, this talented couple penned many huge hits for the Everly Brothers and other artists, including "Bye, Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie", "Bird Dog", "Devoted to You", "Hey Joe", "Love Hurts" and "Raining In My Heart".
Like many rock n roll brothers the Everly’s partnership eventually gfrew antagonistic and ended famously when Phil smashed his guitar on stage and stormed off at an Everly Brothers performance in 1973. An odd piece of Everly history, Don’s daughter Erin was once married to Axl Rose of Gun’s ‘N Roses who reportedly wrote the song “Sweet Child Of MIne” for Erin.
Stay safe and well...and if I was putting together a list of my favorite songs, this one would be near the top.
