Saturday October 3, 2020 “Blinded by the Light” Manfred Mann’s Earth Band
Let's just start with the idea that you could include many of the actual lyrics as ‘misheard’ versions and probably get no argument from anyone.
And we’re going with the Manfred Mann version because, well I like it better than the Springsteen version and yes Virginia there really is a Manfred Mann. Actually Manfred Lubowitz, a South African multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter although most of the Manfred Mann vocals were handled by other members of the group.
And let’s not forget that Manfred Mann brought us one of the first frivolous Friday songs, their classic “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” written by Brill Building veterans Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich who we have encountered many times in past songs of the day.
When recording this tune the band couldn’t find a comfortable way to get from the chorus to the verse and so Manfred created this little keyboard theme which it turns out is actually a slight variation on “Chopsticks”.
Lots of hits for these guys both as Manfred Mann and the Earth Band and interestingly the majority are covers, at least here in the U.S.
So we could have gone with a lot of these lyrics but let’s stick with the most frequently misheard lyric (perhaps the most frequently misheard of all of these mondegreens) and go with the family version of the misheard lyric: Wrapped up like a goose that’s run over in the night”. Correct lyrics below.
Stay safe and well...and I hope you will include the goose version in future versions as you sing along.
