Friday June 24, 2022 “Everyday” Rogue Wave
Today’s song, “Everyday” was written and recorded by Buddy Holly in 1957 but as popular as it has been and as often as it has been covered by other artists it never charted for Holly who was such an amazing influence on music given his short career.
The Beatles got the inspiration for their name from Holly’s band the Crickets; The Hollies named themselves after Buddy Holly; The Rolling Stones first hit was the Buddy Holly song "Not Fade Away" and Tommy Roe's self-penned "Shiela" was essentially Holly’s song "Peggy Sue" with different lyrics.
Today's Stubbs the Zombie band Rogue Wave was formed in 2002 in Oakland CA by, not ironically, Zach Rogue (Schwartz) and in a seemingly odd coincidence the wave named band would eventually wind up on surfer/singer/songwriter Jack Johnson’s Brushfire label for their really interesting 2007 third album, Asleep at Heaven’s Gate.
They have released seven albums and eighteen singles, including today’s “Everyday” and appear on dozens of movie soundtracks. Their songs have been featured in TV shows like Weeds, Friday Night Lights and Heroes and in 2017 Rogue Wave's cover of Kim Carnes 1981 song "Bette Davis Eyes" was featured in Riverdale.
Rogue Wave would get caught up in a series of personal situations with drummer Pat Spurgeon undergoing a kidney transplant and other band members dealing with deaths of family members and births of children.
Stay safe and well…and today's interpretation may well be what Buddy Holly might have sounded like if he had recorded “Everyday” in 2010.
