Thursday June 23, 2022 “Strangers in the Night” Cake
Here's another interesting interpretation from the Stubbs the Zombie video game.
“Strangers in the Night” was a 1966 number one, Grammy winning song for Frank Sinatra and it had no fewer than four separate songwriters claiming authorship. The US version lists Bert Kaempfert who claimed it came from one of the melodies included in his movie score for A Man Could Get Killed. Jazz pianist Avo Robic also claimed authorship, along with Croatian singer Ivo Robic and French composer Phillipe-Gerard.
I suspect that the only folks that saw any profits from this publishing dispute were the lawyers and of course we all know that every song has been written hundreds of times before. There are only seven musical notes.
So let’s get right to the band name, Cake. According to bassist and co-founder Shon Meckfessel, “Rather than referring to the food, the name is meant to be like when something insidiously becomes a part of your life...[we] mean it more as something that cakes onto your shoe and is just sort of there until you get rid of it." OK now I feel better, if a bit confused.
Cake epitomized the postmodern, irony-drenched aesthetic of '90s geek rock, that’s not mine but is completely cut and paste, but it does kind of sum up their sound.
Stay safe and well…and doo-bee-doo-bee-doo.
