Friday June 17, 2022 “Half Breed” Cher

Cher has often suggested that she has Cherokee blood in her mother’s lineage and I guess she musically backs that up with her number one hit “Half Breed’ or maybe in her case one sixteenth breed.

As an indication of her stardom Cher is one of those rare celebrities who is immediately identified by a single name.  Providing credibility to that status Cher has won a Grammy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and an Emmy.  She was included as a 2018 Kennedy Centre Honoree and introduced the world to the tricks of auto tune with her 1998 international number one song “Believe”.

She has sold more than 100 million records as a solo artist and another 40 million as Sonny & Cher and is the first artist to have a number one Billboard chart single in each of the past six decades beginning in the 1960s and into the 2010's.

She has four number one singles, twelve Top 10 singles, twenty two Top 40 singles and a total of thirty three charted singles as a solo artist. Combined that with the entries she had as part of Sonny & Cher and  she has an additional five number one singles, seventeen Top 10 singles, thirty two Top 40 hits and a total of fifty one singles which charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

With all of those credentials Cher is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but Carly Simon is.

We missed her birthday on May 20 but it is not too late to send her belated wishes as she celebrates her 76th year.

Stay safe and well…and I couldn't resist including the video from The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour with Cher scantily dressed, astride a wild stallion singing today’s tune.  Apologies to all who might be offended.

My father married a pure Cherokee

My mother's people were ashamed of me

The Indians said I was white by law

The White Man always called me "Indian Squaw"

 Half-breed, that's all I ever heard

Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word

Half-breed, she's no good they warned

Both sides were against me since the day I was born

We never settled, went from town to town

When you're not welcome you don't hang around

The other children always laughed at me

"Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee"

 Half-breed, that's all I ever heard

Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word

Half-breed, she's no good they warned

Both sides were against me since the day I was born

We weren't accepted and I felt ashamed

Nineteen I left them, tell me who's to blame

My life since then has been from man to man

But I can't run away from what I am

 Half-breed, that's all I ever heard

Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word

Half-breed, she's no good they warned

Both sides were against me since the day I was born

 Half-breed, that's all I ever heard

Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word

Half-breed, she's no good they warned

Both sides were against me since the day I was born
