Thursday June 16, 2022 “Indian Lake” The Cowsills

Thought that we’d lighten up a bit today with the Cowsills and their top ten bubblegummy “Indian Lake” which pays tribute to a spot where “...you'll be able to make the way the Indians do.”

Now if you remember the Cowsills you are probably thinking of them as a novelty act but there is so much wrong with that train of thought.  They were an actual band and all of the members could sing and play their own instruments.  In fact they were such strong musicians that members of the band would turn up on post-Cowsills records.

Drummer John Cowsill, currently married to Vicki Peterson of the female rock group The Bangles, has played and/or sang on recordings by Tommy Tutone, Marshall Crenshaw, Harry Chapin and Bob Dylan among many others.  He currently tours with a version of the Beach Boys.

Speaking of the Beach Boys, Bill Cowsill was asked to join the group but was advised by Brian Wilson , “Billy, don’t do it!.  It’ll drive you crazy. It’ll get you nuts.”  And in a moment of what seems to be the ultimate irony, the Cowsills tune “Grey Sunny Day” was a favorite of the punk rock band The Ramones.

Susan Cowsill, the dancing queen with the great moves in today’s video, has lent her voice to backgrounds for artists like Dwight Twilley, The Smithereens, Carlene Carter and others when she wasn’t writing songs.  She also is the youngest human being to have a Billboard top ten hit…sorry Michael Jackson.

Stay safe and well…and the TV series The Partridge Family was not only inspired by The Cowsills but the band was originally to be included in the series until their manager/father nixed the deal when he found out that Shirley Jones would be playing the role of the band’s mother and not his wife Barbara.

You take a bus marked "Lakewood Drive"

And you keep on ridin' till you're out of the city

Where the air is fine with the sweet smellin' pine

And the countryside's pretty

And you'll see daffodils peepin' (daffodils) over the hills

Or a honey lovin' mama bear (or a honey lovin' mama bear)

Just take a left at the bridge (left at the bridge)

Go down to Quakerforn Ridge (go to the ridge now)

And in a minute you're there (in a minute you're there)

Indian Lake is a scene

You should make with your little one

Keep it in mind if you're lookin to find

Or you can rent a canoe (you can rent a canoe)
