Wednesday June 16, 2021 “Iris“ Goo Goo Dolls
Goo Goo Dolls, really?!
This band said they found their name in an issue of True Detective Magazine after a club owner balked at their original name, the Sex Maggots. Why is Goo Goo Dolls strange, say it out loud. There you go.
But not only does the name sound like something an infant would garble but it doesn't come anywhere near to complimenting the band's original heavy metal sound (I guess neither does the Sex Maggots, for that matter). Sure it might have seemed like an ironic name back when the band was young and confident that they'd always rock out as their earlier sound indicated, but now as an adult contemporary radio staple the name reminds people of thow foolish they must sound talking to babies.
The Goo Goo Dolls were formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York, by guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik, bassist/vocalist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska. The band has had 19 top ten singles on various charts and this song, “Iris”, never mentioned in the lyrics, is named after singer Iris DeMent apparently for no particular reason. It was written for the Nicholas Cage movie City of Angels.
Stay safe and well...and the Sex Maggots started as a hard rocking metal band and then wound up in goo goo.
