Tuesday June 1, 2021 “In Demand” Texas

Not a new band, not a country band and likely not a band that you know even though they have been around over 25 years and sold nearly fifty million records.

I have mentioned the CBS Saturday Morning news show that each week features a musical guest most of which prove to be both disappointing and forgettable but every once in a rare while they hit it big and for me Texas was one of those hits.

A band ironically from Scotland that has been huge in the UK and Europe but for whatever reason they have never made an impact on the US market. Texas was founded by Johnny McElhone and former hair stylist turned lead singer and songwriter Sharleen Spiteri.  I mention the hairstyling not to be disparaging but because her past is evident in her many different looks over the years and yeah it is an unusual transition.

Texas’ debut album Southside in 1989 became a UK top three album and delivered a top ten single.  Their next two albums didn’t fare quite as well but they kept at it and their 1999 album White on Blonde was certified platinum (one million copies) six times and they have been in the top ten ever since.

Couldn’t resist this video, great pop tune, a Bentley convertible and the amazing, late actor Alan Rickman.  It also has an interesting twist at the end that you likely won't see coming.

When asked why they wanted Alan Rickman for this, Sharleen Spiteri, the lead singer, who is featured in the video, replied that Rickman seemed like the sort of man who could pull you into a passionate Tango at a...wait for it... gas station.

Stay safe and well...and if you find this song interesting I can comfortably recommend absolutely everything this band has recorded.

We were together i was blown away,

just like paper from a fan,

but you would act like i was just a kid,

like we were never gonna last.

 CHORUS

But now i've got someone who cares for me, yeah, he wrote my name in silver sands.

I think you know you've lost the love of your life

and you said "i was the best you've ever had",

because I'm in demand,

you're thinking of the way you should have held my hand

and all the times you said you didn't understand,

you never had our love written in your plans,

but now I'm in demand.

don't ever think you saw the best of me,

there's a side you'll never know,

coz love and loving are two different things, set your sights far too low.

CHORUS

Its only when i fall asleep,

i see that winning smile,

then my dreams just move along,

you've lost the race by miles.
