Saturday February 5, 2022 “At Last” Etta James

So we end what may have seemed a somewhat non-traditional group of “Valentine” songs but each one has a wonderfully sincere pledge of love and devotion and I don’t feel the need to apologize for any of them.  And truth be told, you will be better able to create your own mix tape that will more properly express your special  words of love (credit to Buddy Holly there).

As a close for the week though, here is the classic dim the lights, get the candles out and pour some wine song that you can put on repeat for that appropriate Valentine's Day atmosphere.

“At Last” was written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren who had remarkably long and successful careers as songwriters with tunes like “Goodnight My Love”, “There Will Never Be Another You” and “You’ll Never Know” among many, many others each recorded by a long list of big name artists over several decades.

The amazing Etta James version of “At Last” deviates slightly from the original as Ms. James put her own signature interpretation on the song and hers has been imitated many times since her 1960 recording of it.

Stay safe and well…and I hope that these tunes have provided some inspiration for your own mix tape if that’s on your Valentine’s Day agenda.

At last

My love has come along

My lonely days are over

And life is like a song

Oh yeah, yeah

At last

The skies above are blue

My heart was wrapped up in clover

The night I looked at you

I found a dream

That I could speak to

A dream that I can call my own

I found a thrill

To press my cheek to

A thrill that I've never known

Oh yeah, yeah

You smiled, you smiled

Oh and then the spell was cast

And here we are in Heaven

For you are mine

At last
