Friday January 7, 2022 “Bobby & the Rat Kings” Counting Crows

Here’s a recent release from the Counting Crows, a band that has been around for over thirty years, ouch.  Lead singer and primary songwriter Adam Duritz always provides a unique voice and compelling lyrics along with inventive musical arrangements and today's song about that mythical band Bobby & the Rat-Kings is no exception.

Wondering where he draws his vocabulary and allusions from?  Duritz said that his doctor parents moved frequently when he was a child and as a result he had no friends, so he read books…180 books in first grade and 218 in second grade.

Adam Duritz tended bar at Los Angeles' famed Viper Lounge throughout the entirety of the band's early peak of fame and continued until after the release of Counting Crows second album which catapulted him further into the celebrity limelight.  He has been linked romantically to several high profile actresses, one of the benefits of being a rock star…or maybe a bartender.

The mid-song break clearly sounds very Springsteenish but the rest of the song is pure Counting Crows, and both of those are good things.  I encourage you to stick with the lyrics below to enjoy the impact of Dutritz’ s imagery and story.

Stay safe and well…and I keep looking for the touring schedule for Bobby & the Rat-Kings because Adam Duritz has me wanting to see them…but they must already have gone away, and 'we’ll never be the same again'.

I'm an elevator kid pushing buttons when I wanna go home

But my generation hasn't even got a name of its own

We just buy what the TV sells

And almost never stop wishing we were somebody else

But tonight in the dark

I can be myself

When Bobby and the Rat-Kings come to play

We'll make 'em stay

We'll make 'em play

I'll play till the stars all fade

We'll make 'em stay till dawn

Make 'em play all night till the light

 Like we've never seen nothin'

Like we'll we'll never see anybody ever again

When the Rat-Kings go away

We'll never be the same

Z tried to edit Reddit instead it said it had eaten her phone

She goes from Tinder to cinder

Till she remembers she's a flame of her own

You can almost lose your heart

Hoping for something better till it tears you apart

While the days get longer and this night won't start

But when Bobby and the Rat-Kings come to play

We'll make 'em stay

We'll make 'em play

I'll play till the stars all fade

We'll make 'em stay till dawn

Make 'em play all night till the light

Like we've never seen nothin'

Like we'll we'll never see anybody ever again

When the Rat-Kings go away

We'll never be the same, again

Ooh, again

Now Joey's gotta run for the train

Says he's trying to make it

Back to the City by ten

And Mike's on his bike with the motor running

I told him trains were running all night right then

In the moonlit town after the bridge fell down

There were fires and we lost some power

So we all dressed up for the ramble

And ran those streets long past the witching hour

 I saw Dorothy in drag

Taking the Tin Man for a ride

And then Z the Cat said she knew where to go

Then she kissed me without a thought

Said "Sometimes memories are all that we got"

"So come on boy, let's make some at the show"

 So there's some leather-wrapped Fender-strapped kid

With a pick-finger twitch

He's got a recipe for radio or rain

I don't know which

In the shadows when the lights are dowsed

The cinder kids flare while they twist and shout

We're the sparks in the dark

That'll never go out

So when Bobby and the Rat-Kings come to play

We'll make 'em stay

We'll make 'em play

Play till the stars all fade

We'll make 'em stay till dawn

Make 'em play all night till the light

Like we've never seen nothin'

Like we'll we'll never see anybody ever again

 When the Rat-Kings go away

We'll never be the same again

So say hey when the Rat-Kings

When the Rat-Kings

When the Rat-Kings go away

 Say hey when the Rat-Kings

When the Rat-Kings

When the Rat-Kings go away

Say, when the Rat-Kings go

(When the Rat-Kings go)

When they go away

Say hey when the Rat-Kings go away

We'll never be the same, again

Again

Again

Ooh, again

Again
