Wednesday August 12, 2020 “Valerie” The Zutons
Liverpool once again with a group that took their name from Captain Beefhart’s Magic Band guitarist Zoot Horn Rollo, and why not.
OK we had the Amy Winehouse version of this song earlier but these guys wrote it and did it first so it seemed appropriate to revisit it, and yeah it's a good tune. This performance is taken from the BBC show “Later with Jools Holland” and with more than 300 episodes it is the best live music show ever. Look for it online as it always has an amazing variety of artists performing absolutely live.
The Zutons, part of the “Cosmic Scouse” movement, were initially living on the fringes of the music scene and then they added saxophonist and keyboard player Abi Harding and began gaining the attention of both audiences and record labels. Hmmmmm? She also co-writes many of their songs.
Their debut album “Who Killed...The Zutons” remained on the BBC charts for nearly a year and included 3D glasses to view the album cover which fans then began wearing to their performances. They had several additional successes but internal differences and an assault conviction led to the band’s demise. Members would turn up in a variety of British bands including Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Lightning Seeds and also several solo ventures.
Zuton songs have been used in commercials, TV shows and video games.
Stay safe and well.
