Saturday October 17, 2020 “Lollipop” The Chordettes
End of earworm week (can I get a universal “Thank God!!”) and although most of you don’t know this song I promise you will be singing it in your head all day long. Sorry.
“Lollipop”was written by Beverly Ross and Julius Dixon. Ross has 186 songs registered with Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) including "Candy Man," by Roy Orbison, "Judy's Turn To Cry," by Lesley Gore, and "Remember When" by the Earls. Most of you probably don’t know those songs either.
According to legend, Dixon arrived late for a songwriting session explaining that his daughter had gotten a lollipop stuck in her hair and his wife was having trouble removing it from the screaming child, On hearing this story, Beverly Ross sat down at the piano and immediately penned “Lollipop”.
You just never know where inspiration might come from.
The Chordettes, a foursome from Sheboygan, WI (that’s just fun to even say) started as an acapella group and charted a number of other hit songs in addition to “Lollipop” which itself was a Billboard number two song. They also performed on the very first nationally televised American Bandstand TV show, they did not however sing “Lollipop” on that telecast.
An Interesting aside, the daughter of one of the Chordettes, Janet Bleyer, married Phil Everly of the last weeks so harmonious Everly Brothers.
Stay safe and well...and “Lollipop, lollipop, oh lolli lolli, lolli…”
