Wednesday October 14, 2020 “What Is Love” Haddaway
Are you thinking SNL?
Nestor Haddaway, born in Trinidad but grew up in the DC area where he learned to play trumpet and was a member of the Meade Senior High School marching band. He would go on to medical school but would drop out and move to Cologne, West Germany where he formed his own company, Energy, which was involved in organizing fashion shows and photo shoots.
Additionally he did the vocals on demo recordings for German record label Coconut Records which led to a recording contract and his debut single “What is Love”
An international top twenty song, “What is Love” gained even greater popularity when it was used in a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch about three guys who go clubbing. They dress alike, in outdated fashion, and torment women at the clubs by forcing their dancing upon them.
The song has sold 2.6 million copies, inspired a movie, “A NIght at the Roxbury”, has been used in commercials, was sampled by Emminem (“No Love”) and has remained in the audiosphere since its release in 1992.
Stay safe and well...and I always find myself repeating the musical figure of this song in my head rather than the lyrics but they are pretty repetitive so it’s an easy sing along.
