Tuesday October 13, 2020 “My Sharona” The Knack
This may be the earwormiest of the songs this week.
This international number one song held that position for five consecutive weeks in 1979 and came from The Knack’s debut album Get The Knack, also an international number one album. The lyrics to “My Sharona” were written by band co-founder Doug Feiger and yes it was inspired by a girl named Sharona who was indeed eight years younger by then 25 year old Feiger.
Feiger and Sharona were together for a couple of years and remained friends until his passing in 2010. Sharona has had a successful career as a high end real estate salesperson in Los Angeles.
The album cover of Get the Knack was widely criticized for its similarity to early Beatles album Meet the Beatles with the claim that The Knack was trying to position themselves as the next Batles. They only had one additional top forty hit so any comparison was clearly not warranted.
Doug Fieger of The Knack was the younger brother of famed attorney Geoffrey Fieger, who defended Dr. Jack Kervorkian who assisted patients end their lives, known as “Doctor Death”.
Stay safe and well...and maybe you don’t want to get the Knack (M m m my Sharona).
