Monday February 8, 2021 “Eternal Flame” The Bangles
On the road to romance this week and it’s all for you, sorry that's a different song.
The Bangles were an all female band but rather than being a manufactured group of models and actresses they were actually musicians, singers and songwriters and received warm praise from music critics with their debut album/CD. Totally sexist statement here, they were also very easy on the eye.
The band was originally called The Bangs, but ultimately changed it because another band had that name. That band offered the name to the girls for $20,000, but they refused and after some brainstorming they came up with "Bangles," which sounded like "Beatles" who the band members were big fans of.
The band’s first manager was Miles Copeland also managed the Go-Gos and the Police which his brother Stewart Copeland played drums for.
In the BBC programme I'm in a Girl Group, Hoffs revealed she actually sang the studio recording of "Eternal Flame" completely naked due to producer Davitt Sigerson pranking her by telling her Olivia Newton John had done the same thing. He later told Hoffs he had been lying.
The Bangles had a number of top ten hits including “Manic Monday” which was written by Prince specifically for The Bangles (read Susannah Hoffs), their cover of the Paul Simon tune “Hazy Shade of Winter” and sadly “Walk Like an Egyptian”, a total earworm, as well as “Eternal Flame” which was co-written by lead singer and guitarist Susannah Hoffs.
Stay safe and well...and close your eyes and give me your hand. Wait, that's weird.
