Tuesday January 19, 2021 “Impossible Weight “ Deep Sea Diver
I keep hearing this completely likeable song on the radio so I needed to find out more on this new-to-me band.
Turns out Deep Sea Diver was founded by Jessica Dobson over ten years ago and they have three full length albums/CDs and two EPs and Jessica has a long history of playing with pretty famous folks like the Shins, Beck, Spoon, Conner Oberst and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs before starting this band.
I am always amazed by stories like these about how bands that seem to suddenly ‘break onto the scene’ but have actually been bouncing around for years before they get that lucky break. Deep Sea Diver does have an interesting catalog beyond “Impossible Weight” and many of their songs merit a listen as well. Will be interesting to see what they might release as a follow-up to “Impossible Weight”.
Dobson is the primary songwriter, lead singer, arranger and producer and I have yet to understand why the radio version features the band with Sharon Van Etten doing vocals on a take that is identical to this studio version featuring Dobson.
Not completely sure what the lyrics mean but to quote Pete Townsend of the Who “why should I care”, it’s a nice tune and I don’t plan to ever sing along.
Stay safe and well...and hopefully there are no impossible weights in our futures.
