Saturday September 4, 2028 “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” Bruce Springsteen

"Girls in Their Summer Clothes" might either be a bittersweet lament about getting older or a nostalgic remembrance of Bruce’s younger days as he gazes at the beautiful girls in their summer clothes walking by on the boardwalk in Asbury Park.

Interestingly Bruce is not from Asbury Park even though his debut album was titled Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ. However, Bruce does not actually trace his roots there, but grew up a few miles away in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Although he has many number one albums/CDs, Springsteen's best performance on the singles charts was in 1984 when “Dancing In The Dark” clocked in at number two. Ironically, when Mannfed Mann’s Earth Band did a Springsteen cover of “Blinded By the Light,” the opening track of his debut album Greeting From Asbury Park, N.J it actually hit the number one spot in 1977.

“Girls in Their Summer Clothes” won a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2009 and Springsteen said he didn’t even know he was nominated but when he saw the next day that he had won he said “Well that’s great!”

Stay safe and well...and maybe a bit of melancholy as we bid farewell to summer and the “girls in their summer clothes who pass me by”.

Well the street lights shine

Down on Blessing Avenue

Lovers they walk by

Holdin' hands two by two

A breeze crosses the porch

Bicycle spokes spin 'round

Jacket's on, I'm out the door

Tonight I'm gonna burn this town down

And the girls in their summer clothes

In the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes

Pass me by

Kid's rubber ball smacks

Off the gutter 'neath the lamp light

Big bank clock chimes

Off go the sleepy front porch lights

Downtown the store's alive

As the evening's underway

Things been a little tight

But I know they're gonna turn my way

And the girls in their summer clothes

In the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes

Pass me by

Frankie's Diner's

Over on the edge of town

Neon sign spinnin' round

Like a cross over the lost and found

Fluorescent lights

Flicker above Bob's Grill

Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks "fill?"

And says "penny for your thoughts now my poor Bill"

She went away

She cut me like a knife

Had a beautiful thing

Maybe you just saved my life

In just a glance

Down here on Magic Street

Love's a fool's dance

I ain't got no shoes but I still got my feet

And the girls in their summer clothes

In the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes

Pass me by

And the girls in their summer clothes

In the cool of the evening light

The girls in their summer clothes

Pass me by

La la la la, la la la la la la la

La la la la, la la la la la la la

La la la la, la la la la la la la

La la la la, la la la la la la la
