Friday September 3, 2021 “All Summer Long” Beach Boys
No this isn’t the Beach Boys version of Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” but rather their tribute to summer’s end. And could it really be summer without a Beach Boys reference.
The bittersweet sentiment that the good times can't last forever made this song a near-perfect fit for George Lucas' '60s nostalgia movie American Graffiti (1973), about a group of teenagers enjoying their last summer together after graduating from high school. The only flaw was that the film was set in 1962 and the song, which plays over the end credits wasn’t recorded until 1964.
Brian Wilson was famously sued by Chuck Berry for lifting his tune “Sweet Little Sixteen” for the Beach Boys first mega hit “Surfin USA”. Brain was very upfront about having done exactly that and as a result, most of the publishing royalties for that song would go to Chuck Berry.
Stay safe and well...and Brian Wilson would borrow the melody from “All Summer Long” and turn it into a Christmas song, but he never sued himself for lifting that tune.
