Saturday April 2, 2022 “Paperback Writer” Saxon
Here we have a cover that appears to have been done by one of our own song of the dayers…wait that can’t be right.
You know my fascination with band names and these guys started out initially calling themselves Son of a Bitch, but eventually settled on the much less offensive Saxon moniker. Saxon was on the forefront of something I was unfamiliar with, the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM). That musical segment included Iron Maiden and Def Leppard and it must have been a significant movement in the UK since it had its own anagram.
More familiar in the UK, Saxon has released twenty three studio albums, has recorded eight top forty albums and has a number of UK hit singles. They have sold more than fifteen million albums worldwide. In 2021 Saxon released an album of covers which in addition to today’s song includes their takes on tunes by the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and The Kinks.
Hard core Beatles fan that I am, this is still a really catchy, likeable and energetic version of the original “Paperback Writer” which was an international number one for the Fab Four. This McCartney-written song, the Beatles first one that was not about love, was suggested to be a take on Lennon’s books In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works.
Stay safe and well…and for song of the dayer Peter, I know this band has a special appeal. And as that ends our trip into unusual covers we will be off to more familiar ground next week…promise.
