Thursday September 30, 2021 “De Do Do Do De Da Da Da” The Police

According to Gordon Sumner (Sting) who wrote this song, it is about the way politicians, priests, entertainers, and others in power use words to manipulate people. Sting called it "an articulate song about being inarticulate."  And he said he wrote it under the influence of other nonsense songs like “Do Wah Diddy” and “Tutti Fruitti”.There is an unverified version of that explanation that suggests that Sumner just wanted to hear DJs announce the song using the nonsense title of “da do do de da da da’.  And Sting, in perhaps a taste of his hubris, makes the comparison of this song to the opening of James Joyce’s  Finnegan’s Wake.  He might be stretching there.

When we first came to know the Police, they were all blondes which was not so much their image but rather roles that they agreed to play before their fame for a Wrigley’s Gum commercial which required them to be ‘punk rockers’.

Gordon/Sting may have gone to the same school of superstardom that Don Henley graduated from in that he may not be a really nice person.  Police guitarist Andy Summers said  “He’s not a team player, doesn’t share credits and makes comments in the press to that effect.”

Drummer’s drummer Stewart Copeland delivered more than some amazing rhythms because his brother Ian Copeland was a booking agent based in 1977 who helped land the club dates that made the Police a sensation and his other brother Miles Copeland III was the Police’s manager and later founded IRS Records.

Stay safe and well...and when eloquence escapes you I am confident you will do so much better than ‘da do do do de da da da”.

Don't think me unkind

Words are hard to find

They're only cheques I've left unsigned

From the banks of chaos in my mind

And when their eloquence escapes me

Their logic ties me up and rapes me

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Their innocence will pull me through

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

They're meaningless and all that's true

Poets, priests and politicians

Have words to thank for their positions

Words that scream for your submission

And no one's jamming their transmission

'Cause when their eloquence escapes you

Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Their innocence will pull me through

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

They're meaningless and all that's true

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Their innocence will pull me through

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

Is all I want to say to you

De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da

They're meaningless and all that's true
