Tuesday September 28, 2021 “Sussudio” Phil Collins
Remember when Peter Gabriel left Genesis and everyone thought ‘well that’s the end of that band’. Then they released their next album post-Gabriel and it turned out that Phil Collins sounded very much like Gabriel and Genesis soldiered on.
Oh yeah, and the ‘new’ band was interested in recording much more pop oriented tunes and less art songs than Peter Gabriel, so Genesis moved from art band to stadium band.
Then they broke up and the three remaining members each began solo careers, two of which actually surpassed Genesis in sales and popularity: Mike & the Mechanics (Mike Rutherford), and of course Phil Collins.
I didn’t know this but give this a thought: between 1982 and 1990, Collins achieved three UK and seven US number-one singles in his solo career. When his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, as well as his solo career is totalled, he had more US top 40 singles than any other artist during the 1980s.
The 80s that included Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Elton John and...Phil Collins?
Collins has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.
And he started out in the background as the drummer.
Stay safe and well...and if Sussudio is a girl's name it is right up there with nonsense names like Sloopy (‘hang on Sloopy’) and Rama Lama Ding Dong (‘I’ve got a girl named rama lama ding dong’’)
