Wednesday May 19, 2021 “Never Can Say Goodbye“ Rutherford B. (Isaac) Hayes
Rutherford B. Hayes became president in a contentious election when he lost the popular vote but was named president by the Electoral College. Good thing that could never happen today.
And the Electoral College couldn’t help Rutherford B. deliver the soulful interpretation of “Never Can Say Goodbye” that his namesake Isaac Hayes does with today’s song. Originally recorded by the Jackson 5 who had a top ten hit with "Never Can Say Goodbye" which was written by Clifton Davis who starred in a number of 70s and 80s TV series like That’s My Mama and Amen.
Before his very successful solo career Isaac Hayes was a session musician at Stax Volt Records where he played saxophone and keyboards with a variety of artists like Otis Redding and Sam & Dave. Then with his writing partner David Porter. Hayes would compose over 200 songs including “Soul Man”, “Hold On I’m Coming” and notably the theme from the movie “Shaft” which netted Hayes an Academy Award.
Isaac Hayes would become a semi-regular character on the animated adult comedy South Park and would write and sing the infamous “Chocolate Salty Balls'' for the South Park tie-in album/CD Chef Aid. A convert to Scientology Hayes would leave the series when they did an episode mocking that organization.
Stay safe and well...and this is definitely not the Jackson 5 version of the song.
