Tuesday May 18, 2021 “My Sweet Lord“ William Henry (George) Harrison
Today’s rock star president William Henry (George) Harrison was a Founding Father and one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Although George Harrison did not sign any declarations he made a more significant impression and contribution to the world than perhaps his presidential namesake did. And today’s song, “My Sweet Lord” was the focus of the famous lawsuit brought by the writers of “He’s So Fine” suggesting that George lifted their tune for his huge hit song.
I’m no musical expert but when comparing the two I have to say “What??” Are they similar, maybe but then there are about three hundred songs that follow the same chord pattern. Is “My Sweet Lord” lifted, not a chance. George lost the suit.
The version selected today is from the posthumous celebration Concert for George and there is more talent on this stage than I could keep track of including Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Jim Keltner, Gary Brooker, Ray Cooper, Klaus Voorman, Dhani Harrison (George’s son) and so many more and then there’s the audience.
This is such a beautiful song, simple in its melody and repetitive in its plaintive lyrics...and it is not remotely related to that other song.
Stay safe and well...and let’s hope that George is singing this in person to his sweet Lord.
