Sunday July 4, 2021 “More Than a Feeling” Boston
Boston was such a great band but was somehow almost overshadowed by their popularity.
It seems that many bands that are fortunate enough to achieve commercial success are anathema to the critics and sometimes even their audiences, simply because they become so popular.
Boston started out as a project for main songwriter, guitarist and technical wizard Tom Scholz, who recruited guitarist and vocalist Brad Delp to record the first Boston album/CD. The two of them played pretty much all of the instruments on that first recording and it was never really a band until that debut record took off and almost all of the tracks were getting simultaneous radio airplay around the country.
Scholz invented any number of guitar effects that players who came after him still use today and was a pretty talented player himself, always overlooked on those ‘greatest guitarists’ lists. Brad Delp had one of the most remarkable voices in rock & roll with a range, demonstrated in this song, that few could match.
In fact there are many portions of this song that include Delp’s vocals in the background but unless you listen carefully you might think it is simply additional instrumentation.
Boston’s eponymous first record would sell over seventeen million albums making it one of the best selling debut albums/CDs ever and the band would go on to sell a total of more than seventy five million albums/CDs.
Stay safe and well...and when you ‘get tired and thinking cold’, you always have music to help you slip away.
