Wednesday July 29, 2020 “The Rain the Park and Other Things” Cowsills

An intimate connection with the original Woodstock.

Although they could actually play their instruments and had worked as a band before their initial recordings the Cowsills,a family band composed of six siblings, and their mother would only sing but not play on any of their records until 1969, ironically the downside of their career.

Somewhat of a novelty band, when the hits stopped coming, and with rising internal squabbles the group disbanded and headed off in a variety of directions, some musical (The Beach Boys touring band, the DwightTwilley Band, Tommy Tutone) while other Cowsills headed into construction, landscaping and farming.

Occasional spots on oldies tours though keep a changing variety of the Cowsills in front of their fans.

This first big hit for the family band of six Cowsill (sometimes four, sometimes five, sometimes seven) siblings and their mother,  was co-written by Artie Kornfeld who would become one of the three most visible faces of the team that produced the original Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in 1969. The Cowsills however did not perform Woodstock.
Enjoy the 12 year old drummers spinning work at the beginning of this video and imagine how much more successful the band might have been with a little dental work.  Also if you listen closely to the ‘rain’ effect at the opening of this song it is actually sizzling bacon, apparently recorded rain doesn’t sound like rain.

Stay safe and well...and out of the rain, but do enjoy the park and other things.

I saw her sitting in the rain

Raindrops falling on her

She didn't seem to care

She sat there and smiled at me

 Then I knew

She could make me happy

Flowers in her hair

Flowers everywhere

 I love the flower girl

Oh, I don't know just why, she simply caught my eye

I love the flower girl

She seemed so sweet and kind, she crept into my mind

 To my mind

I knew I had to say hello

She smiled up at me

And she took my hand

And we walked through the park alone

 And I knew

She had made me happy

Flowers in her hair

Flowers everywhere

 I love the flower girl

Oh, I don't know just why, she simply caught my eye

I love the flower girl

She seemed so sweet and kind, she crept into my mind

 To my mind

 Suddenly, the sun broke through

I turned around, she was gone

All I had left

Was one little flower in my hand

 But I knew

She had made me happy

Flowers in her hair

Flowers everywhere

 I love the flower girl

Was she reality or just a dream to me?

I love the flower girl

Her love showed me the way to find a sunny day

 Sunny day

 I love the flower girl

Was she reality or just a dream to me?

I love the flower girl
