Saturday July 18, 2020 “Things We Said Today” Beatles
No reason, just a neat Beatles tune that doesn't get overplayed.
“Things We Said Today” was written by Paul McCartney (all songs are credited to Lennon/McCartney) while cruising in the Bahamas with his then girlfriend Jane Asher whose brother was Peter (Asher) of the English duo Peter & Gordon who got their start with an international number one song “World Without Love”, coincidentally written by Paul McCartney.
The cruising in the Bahamas thing sounds cool but McCartney suggests that he was ‘not the best sailor’ and the fumes from the boat’s engines and the rocking back and forth and up and down and back and forth and up and down left him a bit seasick and perhaps led to these somewhat melancholy lyrics.
The song was written to be featured in their first film “A Hard Day’s Night” but was ultimately not included however it does appear on the film’s album/CD. At the film's release, New Yorker film critic Brendan Gill wrote: “Though I don't pretend to understand what makes these four rather odd-looking boys so fascinating to so many scores of millions of people, I admit that I feel a certain mindless joy stealing over me as they caper about…”
Stay safe and well...and maybe caper about today.
