Tuesday March 8, 2022 “Save It For a Rainy Day” Jayhawks

I really like the Jayhawks and am confused why it has taken over 570 songs to finally get to them.

“Save It for a Rainy Day” was written by Gary Louris guitarist, singer and principal songwriter of the Minneapolis group The Jayhawks.  He has said that it was inspired by a Canadian advertisement, "for a bank about trying to save it for a rainy day. I thought, 'Hey, maybe they'll use our song and give us some money and use it as their little thing.'"

The lyrics are "about two or three people kind of mixed all together." Louris said he couldn't mention one of them, because she's well known. He feels that this song is one of the two perfect pop songs that he has written, the other being “Blue”.

Today’s song appears on the Jayhawks 2003 Rick Rubin produced album coincidentally titled Rainy Day Music which includes guest appearances by Bernie Leadon, Jakob Dylan and Matthew Sweet.  In 2009 Paste magazine placed Rainy Day Songs at number forty four on their Fifty Best Albums of the Decade.

The Jayhawks have recorded eleven albums and remain an FM radio favorite as well as one of my favorites with their jangly guitars, sweet lyrics and lovely harmonies.

Stay safe and well…and yes that is actress Mary Louise Parker in the video, perhaps the person Gary Louris couldn’t mention “...because she’s well known”?

Pretty little hair-do don't do what it used to

Can't disguise the living

All the miles that we've been through

 Looking like a train wreck

Wearing too much makeup

The burden that you carry

Is more than one soul could ever bare

 [Chorus]

Don't look so sad, Marina

There's another part to play

Don't look so sad, Marina

Save it for a rainy day

Save it for a rainy day

Save it for a rainy day

You never make your mind up

Like driving with your eyes shut

Rough around the edges

Won't someone come and take you home

 Waiting for a breakthrough

What will you set your mind to?

We stood outside the Chinese restaurant in the rain
