Saturday February 26, 2022 “Island in the Sun” Weezer
As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer merged heavy power pop of arena with the angular guitar leads of alt rockers while injecting their melodies with doses of '70s metal. They are also a great cover band with recorded versions of songs by everyone from A-ha to Black Sabbath along with bands like The Turtles and Eurythmics.
None of the members of Weezer, especially leader Rivers Cuomo, were conventional rockers but were kids who hung out in their garage to play along with their favorite records. As a result, their music was infused with a quirky sense of humor and an endearing awkwardness. Cuomo’s initial exposure to the world of rock was playing in heavy metal bands.
As Weezer gained in popularity Cuomo would take leave to attend Harvard where, because of his ‘nerd’ image he was able to move about as any normal student might. Cuomo studied classical composition at Harvard and received his degree in 2008.
Weezer also incorporated clever videos that generated strong airplay on MtV giving them even broader appeal and expanding their audience.
“Island in the Sun” was the second single from the self-titled album Weezer, but it almost didn't make the album; producer Ric Ocasek fought for it and the song ended up being one of their biggest radio hits.
Stay safe and well…and as for the end of our week in the islands all I have to add is ‘hip, hip”
