Friday February 18, 2022 “Let’s Get It On” Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye is one of the true icons of the R&B scene. His classic 1973 album, Let’s Get It On, is filled with sensual, soulful rhythms, while 1971’s What’s Going On is an incredible work that continues to speak to political injustice and continues to influence artists even today.
Marvin Gaye began his musical career as a member of the doo wop group the Moonglows and then became a session drummer at Motown/Tamla when that group broke up. While doing session work at Motown he was also writing songs like “Beachwood 4-5789” for the Marvelettes and “Dancing in the Streets” for Martha & the Vandellas.
Gaye’s own breakout hit would be his self penned “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”. He would go on to record more than thirty albums, eighty three singles and has been described as someone "who transcended the boundaries of rhythm and blues as no other performer had done before."
His influence is so strong that he has been referenced in several hit singles by other artists including Spandau Ballet (“True”), Charlie Puth (“Marvin Gaye”) and the Commodores (“Night Shift”) among others.
In 2015 Marvin Gaye’s estate successfully sued singer Robin Thicke and it became one of the biggest copyright lawsuits of recent years, further highlighting Marvin Gaye’s standing as one of the most influential Black musicians of all time.
Stay safe and well…and it's difficult for me to relate to the fact that Marvin Gaye has been gone for nearly forty years.
