Thursday August 19, 2021 “One Fine Morning” Lighthouse
Our next festival is Isle of Wight Festival which was held between August 26-31, 1970 at Afton Down, an area on the western side of the Isle of Wight in England. It was the last of three consecutive music festivals to take place on the island between 1968 and 1970 and is often acknowledged as the largest musical event of its time, with a larger attendance than Woodstock. Although estimates vary, Guinness World Records estimated that between 600,000 to 700,000 people attended.
As for the artists who appeared it might actually be easier to list the few who didn’t but the list included, among many others Jimi Hendrix, Cactus, Chicago, the Doors, Lighthouse, the Moody Blues, the Who, Miles Davis, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Melanie, Jethro Tull, Tiny Tim, the Moody Blues, Sly and the Family Stone, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Free, Leonard Cohen and an unannounced set by John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin’ Spoonful.
The Isle of Wight was a favored retirement destination of the British well-heeled, and a haven of the yachting set, so aside from the fact that it actually was an island destination that meant massive logistical and transportation problems, many of the traditional residents deplored the huge influx of "hippies" and "freaks".
Nonetheless, weather aside, the festival took place without incident.
As we did with the previous festivals let’s go with one of the lesser known groups Lighthouse, big stars in Canada. Why Lighthouse? Heck why not, it’s an interesting song by a band that will likely remind you of the group Chicago or Blood Sweat & Tears. So why wasn’t Lighthouse as successful as those bands...yeah, why not?
Stay safe and well...and how many songs do you know that open with a bass and drum solo?
