Thursday August 5, 2021 “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers vs “Dani California” Red Hot Chili Peppers

“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” was written by Tom Petty and recorded with his Heartbreakers in 1993 and became a top twenty hit for them while the video that accompanied the song won several MtV Video awards including Best Video of the Year.

Heartbreaker guitarist Mike Campbell said the song started out as “Indiana Girl” but Tom didn’t think that sounded right and switched it up to be “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” but left the Indiana references in the song intact.  In the recent posthumous album/CD releaseWildflowers, the song “Leave Virginia Alone” was included which Petty had written at the same time as “Mary Jane…” but decided not to include it back then because it had a similar feel lyrically and musically.

According to Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer and lyricist  Anthony Keidis the Dani in “Dani California” is a representation of every girl he has come in contact in his life and she also makes lyrical appearances in “Californication” and “By the Way” by the Chili Peppers.

Their video is intended to reference all of the music that has influenced them from rockabilly through grunge and everything in between.  And doesn’t Anthony Keidis bear a remarkable resemblance to Prince in a couple of segments or is it just me.

Petty has been questioned about the similarities of the two songs which have been pointed out by many people and he has said “A lot of rock and roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry”.  Did I mention that both “Mary Jane's Last Dance” and “Dani California” were produced by Rick Rubin?

Stay safe and well…and yes that is Kim Basinger in the more than a little creepy Tom Petty video.

Last Dance with Mary Jane

She grew up in an Indiana town

Had a good lookin' mama who never was around

But she grew up tall and she grew up right

With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night

Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen

She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen

I was introduced and we both started groovin'

She said, "I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin' on, keep movin' on"

Last dance with Mary Jane

One more time to kill the pain

I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

Well, I don't know but I've been told

You never slow down, you never grow old

I'm tired of screwing up, tired of goin' down

Tired of myself, tired of this town

Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes

Honey, put on that party dress

Buy me a drink, sing me a song

Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long

Last dance with Mary Jane

One more time to kill the pain

I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

There's pigeons down on Market Square

She's standin' in her underwear

Lookin' down from a hotel room

The nightfall will be comin' soon

Oh, my, my, oh, hell yes

You've got to put on that party dress

It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone

I hit the last number, I walked to the road

Last dance with Mary Jane

One more time to kill the pain

I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

Dani California

Getting born in the state of Mississippi

Papa was a copper, and her mama was a hippy

In Alabama she would swing a hammer

Price you got to pay when you break the panorama

She never knew that there was anything more than poor

What in the world does your company take me for?

Black bandanna, sweet Louisiana

Robbing on a bank in the state of Indiana

She's a runner

Rebel, and a stunner

On her merry way saying baby, watcha gonna?

Looking down the barrel of a hot metal forty-five

Just another way to survive

California, rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California, show your teeth

She's my priestess

I'm your priest

Yeah, yeah, yeah

She's a lover, baby, and a fighter

Should've seen it coming when I got a little brighter

With a name like Dani California

Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya

A little loaded, she was stealing another breath

I love my baby to death

California, rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California, show your teeth

She's my priestess

I'm your priest

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Who knew the other side of you?

Who knew that others died to prove?

Too true to say goodbye to you

Too true to say, say, say

Pushed the fader, gifted animator

One for the now, and eleven for the later

Never made it up to Minnesota

North Dakota man

Wasn't gunnin' for the quota

Down in the Badlands she was saving the best for last

It only hurts when I laugh

Gone too fast

California, rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California, show your teeth

She's my priestess

I'm your priest

Yeah, yeah, yeah

California, rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California, show your teeth

She's my priestess

I'm your priest

Yeah, yeah, yeah
