Sunday July 25, 2021 “True Companion” Marc Cohn
Marc Cohn wrote this song for his girlfriend of seven years while in a cab to pick her up for dinner. After a romantic dinner, he sang her this song and she asked Marc if this was a proposal to which Marc promptly replied “No!”.
When he retells this story he adds at this part, “Men are such scum.” He eventually married his girlfriend and they have two children together.
Cohn, playing in a fourteen piece band called the Supreme Court, caught the attention of Carly Simon who recommended him to her label Atlantic The actual SupremeCourt is only a nine piece group. Cohn would win a Grammy for Best New Artist fror his Marc Cohen album and while recording his second album would attract such talent as David Crosby, Graham Nash and Bonnie Raitt.
Cohn may be better known for his major hit song about Elvis, “Walking in Memphis” which factually retells his actual trip to Memphis and Graceland, maybe not the ghost of Elvis part, but the rest of the song including Reverend Al Green and Muriel “down at the Hollywood” is all quite true.
Stay safe and well...and I hope you all have found a true companion.
