Monday January 4, 2021 “Breakin’ the Chains of Love” Fitz and the Tantrums
I was just thinking the other day, whatever happened to Fitz & the Tantrums, I bet you were too.
Legend has it that Michael Fitzpatrick (Fitz) was going through a difficult breakup with his then girlfriend and she told him if he didn’t come and get his keyboard she was throwing it out. Well he retrieved it, brought it home and began writing songs that would be the majority of the first Fitz and the Tantrums album with most of the tunes dealing with, wait for it, a break-up.
He contacted college friend and saxophone player James King as he started to form a band and King suggested that Fitz reach out to singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist Noelle Skaggs and the core of Fitz & the Tantrums was formed.
Their debut album/CD “Pickin’ Up the Pieces”went to number one and delivered two top ten singles. Fitzpatrick has said that the band's musical style can be fairly described as "soul-influenced indie pop." He noted that while the band is influenced by the classic songs of the Motown and Stax record labels, they are not trying to create an exact replica of that music.
So to paraphrase the lemons/lemonade cliche, when you are going through a breakup just turn it into a best selling song.
Stay safe wnd well...and it’s a new year so get out those stored keyboards, dusty guitars, ukuleles, horns, harmonicas and tambourines and start making your own music.
