Thursday December 31, 2020 “Cover of the Rolling Stone” Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show

OK, we’re rock & roll stars, so why aren’t we on the cover of the Rolling Stone?

This song as well as others that Dr. Hook recorded were written by Shel Silverstein who among many other things wrote children's books all of which I highly recommend if you are not already familiar with them.  His “Giving Tree” is a lovely metaphor for parenting but, at least for me, always requires some handy tissues when reading.

The band Dr. Hook has that straight out of the southern swamps sound which they likely acquired in their hometown of Union City NJ.  Wait, what?  Union City is not south of many places and really isn’t very swampy and yet that’s what the band sounds like.

And a very important portion of this song is the quick but truly memorable guitar solo...and not for any good reasons. You may only know this band for this novelty piece but they have a surprisingly deep and diverse catalog all with that Dr. Hook Union City flavor.

Stay safe and well...and Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show did finally get their picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone...but it was a cartoon.

Oh, we're big rock singers.

We got golden fingers.

And we're loved everywhere we go.

We sing about beauty,

And we sing about truth

At ten thousand dollars a show.

We take all kinds of pills

To give us all kind of thrills,

But the thrill we've never known

Is the thrill that'll getcha

When you get your picture

On the cover of the Rolling Stone.

 Rolling Stone...

Wanna see my picture on the cover.

Stone...

Wanna buy five copies for my Mother.

Stone...

Wanna see my smiling face

On the cover of the Rolling Stone.

I got a freaky old lady

Named Cocaine Katy

Who embroiders all my jeans.

Got my poor old grey-haired daddy

Drivin' my limousine.

It's all designed to blow our minds,

But our minds won't really get blown

Like the blow that'll getcha

When you get your picture

On the cover of the Rolling Stone.

We gotta lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies

Who do anything we say.

We got a genuine Indian guru

Who's teaching us a better way.

We got all the friends that money can buy,

So we never have to be alone.

And we keep getting richer,

But we can't get our picture

On the cover of the Rolling Stone.
