Tuesday February 16, 2021 “Lucille“ Little Richard

Continuing a musical Black History tribute we have Richard Penniman, Little Richard, who once said that if Elvis was the King of Rock then Little Richard was the Queen.

If you’re thinking that Jerry Lee Lewis took Little Richard’s piano thumping style and made it more palatable for white audiences you would be correct and one of today’s stars Adam Weiner (Low Cut Connie) also borrows from Little Richard’s style and showmanship.  Pat Boone owes his career to Little Richard as Boone’s first big hit was a whitened version of Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti”...and a truly pathetic version by comparison, I might add.

Gracious man that he is Little Richard said he appreciated Pat Boone recording his material because Boone ‘opened a door that he couldn’t get in.’  Little Richard knew the Beatles long before we did, when he toured with the Rolling Stones and the Animals they were his opening acts before they were stars and a young man named Jimi Hendrix played guitar in his band while way before he was ‘experienced’.

Stay safe and well...and enjoy Little Richard, who in his own words was ‘The Innovator, The Originator, and The Architect of Rock and Roll’.  Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom!

Lucille, you won't do your sister's will?

Oh, Lucille, you won't do your sister's will?

You ran off and married, but I love you still

Lucille, please, come back where you belong

Lucille, please, come back where you belong

I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone

I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight

I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight

Lucille, please, come back where you belong

I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone, whoa

I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight

I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight

Lucille, please, come back where you belong

I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone

Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart

Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart

I played for it, baby, and gave you such a wonderful start?

My pretty baby said she wasn't for it
