Sunday March 7, 2021 “Without You” Nilsson
John Lennon was once asked who his favorite group was and he responded that his favorite group was Harry Nilsson before anyone had really heard of Nilsson and that cheeky Beatle endorsement helped launch Harry’s career.
Harry Nilsson was an amazing songwriter and singer but he refused to perform publicly or tour and never achieved the fame he deserved. With a three octave range he could sing anything and had such an imaginative and diverse feeling for tunes and lyrics that he wasn’t easily pigeonholed into a particular style. Rolling Stone has Harry as number sixty two on their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.
With all of the amazing songs Nilsson wrote and recorded his only two Grammys were for songs he didn’t write: “Everybody’s Talking” which was the theme from the movie Midnight Cowboy written by Fred Neil and today’s song of the day “Without You” which was written by Pete Hamm and Tom Evans from the band Badfinger.
Paul McCartney has called this song ‘the killer song of all time’ and there must be some consensus on his opinion as “Without You” has been recorded by more than 180 other artists.
Stay safe and well...and cherish those close to you every day.
