Saturday February 20, 2021 “Lean on Me” Bill Withers
Maybe legendary isn’t the suit that fits Bill Withers but all of the songs that he wrote and sang resonate with personal messages that all of us can relate to and his impact as a songwriter is undeniable.
Withers wrote "Lean on Me", an ode to the supportive power of friendship, based on his experiences growing up in a West Virginia coal mining town. He has said that times were hard and when a neighbor needed something beyond their means, the rest of the community would chip in and help. His first album Just As I Am was produced by Booker T. Jones (Booker T & the MGs) and guitar parts were played by Stephen Stills
Withers has three Grammys, six international top ten, million selling tunes and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a medley of his songs were performed by Stevie Wonder and John Legend.
Withers replied after that performance that he felt it was a special honor to have his songs performed by a 'wonder' and a 'legend'.
Stay safe and well...let's always be someone that a friend can call on if they are in need.
