Friday July 22, 2022 “Four Chords” Axis of Awesome

We’re up to number four in rock & roll by the numbers, if you are counting.

Yesterday we talked about Len Barry’s lawsuit over the similarity between his tune “1-2-3” and a Supremes song, so today we have this really cool video by the very clever, funny and talented Axis of Awesome to explain that all you need are four chords and those chords would allow you to write hundreds of popular songs.

It doesn’t hurt that these guys are great singers, the “Take on Me” falsetto is just so dead on…and so vocally challenging.

Now I know I have suggested that they have all been written before and will back that up with the mathematics of music, there are only seven notes (sure sharps, flats, minors, 7ths, 9ths, etc.) but there are still basically only seven notes…and the Axis of Awesome guys offer the musical proof of how similar songs can be.

There is some language in the video just as a caution…like the music though, nothing you haven’t heard before.

Stay safe and well…and those four chords are I V vi IV (one, five, six (minor), four) the easiest and one of the most common is  C G Am F.  Enjoy.

Too many different songs to include the lyrics but they are featured in the video if you want to try and sing along.
