Friday September 23, 2022 ”Video Killed the Radio Star” The Buggles
Today’s radio song, “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first video to air on MTV which launched August 1, 1981, The Buggles were an English new wave band formed in London in 1977 by singer and bassist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes.
Ironically, shortly after the release of The Buggles 1979 debut album The Age of Plastic, which contained the single “Video Killed the Radio Star”, Horn and Downes would join the band Yes replacing Rick Wakeman and John Lodge. It wouldn’t be until after its premiere and constant rotation on MtV in 1981 that the song would gain enough traction to become a number one hit in sixteen countries.
Although they would not have the any additional hits to compare with “Video Killed the Radio Star” they did have three more moderately successful singles in the UK.
Stay safe and well…and video most certainly did not kill the radio star it just trivialized music in favor of video presentation in way no one could have imagined.
