Tuesday September 20, 2022 “On the Radio” Donna Summer
We haven’t had a lot of Donna Summer on our songs of the day because I was saving her for radio week so she could deliver her own special tribute to the radio.
Donna Summer's title as the "Queen of Disco" wasn't mere hype, During the '70s alone, she topped the Billboard club chart eleven times with high-quality, often high-concept material that included the rapturous "Love to Love You Baby" (1975), "I Feel Love" (1977), a radically transformed "MacArthur Park" (1978), and one of her five Grammy-winning recordings, "Hot Stuff" (1979).
In addition to her strong vocal talents Donna Summer wrote many of her hit songs including “On the Radio” which she co-wrote with Italian composer Giorgio Moroder.
“On the Radio” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but lost to Bette Midler's "The Rose". It would be Donna Summer’s tenth Top 10 hit in the US, and was also her eighth consecutive Top 5 entry. It was also her 14th consecutive entry on the Disco chart, where it peaked at number eight, and it also snagged the number nine spot on the Soul chart.
Sadly, Donna Summer left us on May 17, 2012 but she left behind a remarkable catalog of truly memorable music.
Stay safe and well…and here’s another demonstration of the power of the radio, as it moves two lovers back together.
