Thursday September 15, 2022 “Two of Us” Beatles

“Two of Us” is the opening song on The Beatles’ final album, Let It Be and was written by Paul McCartney about his fondness for getting deliberately lost in the country with his future wife Linda. It was originally titled “On Our Way Home”.

In the film Let It Be, McCartney and John Lennon share the same microphone to sing this song. The middle sections “you and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead” and “you and me chasing papers” contain likely references to their relationship, with both acutely aware that their time as Beatles was drawing to a close.

The song is also just one of many fine examples of Lennon and McCartney harmonies guided by the early influences of the Everly Brothers who clearly had a strong impact on many of the Beatles vocal arrangements.

Stay safe and well…and sometimes the most worthwhile adventure could actually be 'going’nowhere’.

Two of us riding nowhere

Spending someone's

Hard earned pay

You and me Sunday driving

Not arriving

On our way back home

 We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

 Two of us sending postcards

Writing letters

On my wall

You and me burning matches

Lifting latches

On our way back home

 We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

 You and I have memories

Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

 Two of us wearing raincoats

Standing solo

In the sun

You and me chasing paper

Getting nowhere

On our way back home

We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

You and I have memories

Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats

Standing solo

In the sun

You and me chasing paper

Getting nowhere

On our way back home

 We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

 We're going home

You better believe it

Goodbye
