Friday November 26, 2021 “Tiny Dancer” Elton John
This ‘dance’ tune from Elton John has become a classic even though the highest position on the charts when it came out was #41...maybe because it was too long for radio airplay and when it was released off the Madman Across the Water album Elton John hadn’t become Elton (Super/Supertar) John yet.
Remember the Almost Famous movie reference last week, probably not but I just reminded you. “Tiny Dancer” is included in that film in a scene where the rock band is on tour, at each other's throats, then "Tiny Dancer" comes on in the tour bus, they all start singing along and remember how they're connected through their love of music.
The power of music, even in the movies.
The song’s “blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band…” may reference lyricist Bernie Taupin’s then girlfriend Maxine who would be his future first wife...he has four of those, wives. Taupin claims that ‘tiny’ was a reference to the California girls he met while touring with Elton in the U.S. because they were petite...which didn’t fit lyrically. “Hold me closer petite dancer…?”
Budweiser used the song in one of their 2011 Superbowl commercials. Check it out here, it’s fun.
Stay safe and well...and do some tiny dancing on your own...no one's watching.
