Monday November 8, 2021 “Till I Hear It from You” Gin Blossoms
This week we will be going to one of my favorite record stores, Empire Records...remember records? Well they're making a comeback.
Empire Records was a little 1995 movie with an interesting cast. If you’re not familiar with the movie you can check out the trailer here. And as interesting as the cast was, the soundtrack was even better, so join me as we head into Empire Records.
We all remember when the Gin Blossoms burst onto the scene with the multi-hit single album New Miserable Experience...burst onto the scene after six plus years working the college market.
Noted for their jangly guitars and poppy songs, many of which were written by band founder and lead guitarist and primary songwriter, Doug Hopkins. It gets sad here because Doug had a problem with depression and alcoholism and would eventually be fired from the band and forced to sign over his publishing rights to the band. Brand New Miserable Experience would spawn three top ten hits and sell more than five million copies.
Hopkins sold the rights for $15,000 to those singles and the albums. And in an odd piece of irony, the band's name Gin Blossoms comes from the condition caused by broken capillaries that make a person's nose or face red caused by too much drinking.
Today's song “Till I Hear It from You” a top ten tune for the group was co-written by Marshall Crenshaw who once played John Lennon in the stage production of Beatlemania, a role which Crenshaw credited as a unique musical learning experience. Crenshaw has recorded a number of his own similar poppy hits over the years.
Stay safe and well...and as the song suggests never ‘take advice from fools’, remembering it's always important to separate the fools from those whose advice comes from wisdom.
