Wednesday November 3, 2021 “Everlong” Foo Fighters
Knowing that the Foo Fighters needed to have a hit record twenty five years ago to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame frightens me because I think of them as a ‘new ‘ band.
Songwriter, singer, guitarist, drummer, Dave Grohl built a recognizable signature for the Foo Fighters around a heavy, yet melodic template and a modern rock sound anchored by Grohl's love of classic guitar rock in what was originally to be a solo project.
Urban myth has it that Grohl, not the best high school student, went to his mother to tell her that he wanted to drop out of school to pursue music. His mother being the practical parent that she was, and realizing that this maybe wasn’t the best decision, told him to go for it. In hindsight, the right choice but maybe not the best example of sensible parenting.
In one of the true examples of the brotherhood of music, when Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins developed a drug dependency Grohl took the band off the road to help Hawkins get through his addiction...which he did.
Grohl also directed a documentary about the legendary Los Angeles recording studio Sound City. The film appeared early in 2013 to positive reviews, and it was accompanied by a soundtrack called Sound City: Reel to Real, which featured Grohl-directed jams with a variety of Sound City veterans including Paul McCartney and others. It is an interesting piece that I would recommend to those with the collaborative aspect of making music.
Stay safe and well...and this is Dave Grohl’s second time around in the R&R Hall as he was inducted as the drummer in Nirvana.
