Friday June 10, 2022 “He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss) The Crystals

Being a mostly anti-establishment kind of a guy I really have difficulty agreeing with institutions like censors but, oh yes this song should have been banned.  And for me it always begs the question who writes songs about domestic abuse and as importantly who would record it.

Well, multi-hit songwriters Carole King and Jerry Goffin wrote this little gem and the great Phil Spector recorded it with his then favorite group The Crystals, who were coming off three top ten hits, and it almost ended their career.

Nobody liked this song, with good reason.  The Crystals hated it, radio stations were refusing to play it and the record buying public was ignoring it, even Carole King said that she was sorry she ever had anything to do with the song.  So why would Phil Spector record it?  Exactly.

Every once in a while the censors do get it right.
