Wednesday June 8, 2022 “Girl Don’t Come” Sandie Shaw
OK, wait a minute, don’t even go there unless you are looking to get a job as a simple minded censor. I know what it might seem like at first glance if you are not familiar with this song and you are probably horrified if that’s where you went, thinking who writes songs about that!
Did you take a breath? Here’s what the song is about; this guy has a date and he’s waiting, and waiting, and waiting for her to show up and she doesn’t…the girl don’t come. Well maybe that’s not great grammar and perhaps the songwriter Chris Andrews had some ulterior intentions when he wrote it but truth be told “Girl Don’t Come” was the B side, records remember, essentially filler for the song that was supposed to be the hit “I’d Be Far Better Off Without You”.
So what happened? Well you know DJs, they’re an evil bunch with filthy minds and when they saw the song title they couldn’t resist playing it immediately and frequently so they could constantly say “that was Sandie Shaw, “Girl Don’t Come”.
Unlike most of our banned songs that would go on to create big hits this time around it essentially ended a growing career in the US for UK singer Sandie Shaw. She said, “The song went straight into the charts and was immediately banned. When I applied to work in the States, I discovered that I had joined a very different 'hit list' and was refused entry with others like John Lennon."
The song would be a top five hit in the UK but after being banned would only get to number forty two in the US.
Stay safe and well…and this is actually a pretty decent tune, in a Dusty Springfield kind of way.
